Historical Background

Weather is a part of everyday life, contributing to how we dress, what we choose to do and how we stay comfortable even indoors. The majority of the time, weather conditions are something to be aware of, but in extreme conditions can wreak havoc on an area in a relatively short time. This week, we're looking at weather and climate related events that have a financial impact of one billion dollars or greater.

The events in this dataset are the type of disasters that make the news. From hurricanes to wildfires to tornado outbreaks and more, we often hear about the events, but unless directly impacted can be unaware of the costs associated with them. The figures in this week's have been inflation adjusted to 2018 figures using the consumer price index, and this inflation adjusted cost of some of the more historic events is incredible.
